This package more than replaces MS Office, and its equivalents, especially if you really are looking for an alternative, and unlike Word, Excel, and other things contained within MS Office, Open Office only 'phone's home' if you want it to... Unless you have an attentive firewall, MS Office calls home, without your consent...

Anyway, my highest recommendation for this Office Suite!

Excellent program suite. Almost everything offered by MS is here yet it offers many features not covered by MS at all. Why would anyone pay money for an office suite with the OpenOffice.org suite of tools at their disposal? My only gripe is with the opening speed which can sometimes be a little on the slow side.

I have been using this product off and on for the last 2 years. When it comes to Microsoft Office, I started using it when Bill released Word 1.0. There are things I can do in MS Office that I haven't figured out how to in OppenOffice, but the more I use this product the more I am impressed with it. In fact there are some things I can do easier in OpenOffice than in MS Office. Obviously since I switch back and forth between these 2 products I need file compatibility. he only problem I ever encountered was on a particularly complicated spreadsheet. For the vast majority of office suite user, OpenOffice will do everything you need done. Considering the differential in price, for the vast majority of users OpenOffice is the only sensible choice.

OOo is a excellent replacement of MS-Office. The only thing you miss is the nice MS-Office 2007 interface. Outlook can be replaced with Evolution or Kmail depending on your GUI. I can recommend people this officesuite and I rate it with 5/5.

I've been able to completely stay away from MS Office with this software! I've 'needed' to use certain features of MSOffice with certain school assignments but have found my way around all of them with OpenOffice! Thank you OO for freeing me of the dreaded Microsoft demon!

I just downloaded Openoffice yesterday hoping for good things. I uninstalled it today. For typing out text, it works (besides that annoying and incorrect finish-typing-your-word-for-you function which I could not figure out how to turn off). Past that, I'd pay for MS Word to save the frustration I had with Openoffice. What made me uninstall the program was something that most folks will probably never use, and that's the envelope function. I burned up 2 dozen envelopes and more than half an hour trying to figure out how to print just one good envelope. That was the frustrating nail in the OO coffin for me.

I'm not a MS hater or lover, but I opened up MS Works and it took just ONE try to print out an envelope that had everything in the right place. Just once! Oh the joy! When your time is real money, burning it up along with envelopes does not make sense. Printing envelopes should be easy, not a learning by trial and error process.

I know it's open source, and I was truly juiced to use OO. I'm not a programmer, I'm a writer, so the little things matter to me. Sorry, but it just didn't work for me.

The idea of comparing Open Office to MS Works absolutely leaves me speechless. It's like saying "I'd rather ride my tricycle to work than drive my car because the tricycle is easier to figure out." You might also try notepad, it doesn't get much simpler than that. Printer issues happen, regardless of the software you're using. This is a horrible basis for evaluating software.

Honestly Open-Office is among the best open-source programs available and it's a godsend. Especially in comparison to the lastest (and worst) version of MS Office which I think accomplished nothing but make the UI less intuitive and the software as a whole more prone to errors and crashes. I've had so many problems with it that I've finally put in a request with IT to have open-office installed on my work computer, then I can be done with this garbage once and for all. I already use open-office at work on my linux box and I've experienced no problems thus far going between the two.

I've been using open office for a couple of months now. I use the word processor and spreadsheet functions to replace MS word & Excel. At work we use MS office, but I use open office now at home & on my netbook. I think Open Office is excellent. It does everything I want and need. I especially like the save as PDF function. I agree with previous posters its GUI is better than the new MS office. The only time I use MS office at home is when I need to use reference software like EndNote.

LibreOffice is the development community's successor to
Oracle's OpenOffice. I recommend LibreOffice over OpenOffice
now.

I used to LOVE openoffice. Was at a friend's house who's
daughter needed Office. SO you teamed up with the scumbagware
download? forget it. I talked to her school and through
techsoup they are now getting the real thing WITHOUT their
search engines being changed and whatever that completely
unnecessary download manger does.

I was going to purchase the most recent MS Office when I discovered Open Office does everything I need. And it does it better that at least my old MS office copy. I could not be more pleased.
