Lemmings is a multi-port game introduced in 1991 by DMA Design, also known as Rockstar North. It was and still is popular with gamers of all ages. It is now configured for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2 and 3 and other systems.
The main objective of the game is to guide the lemmings around obstacles and get them to each level's exit with a minimum of casualties. It is a game of strategy, requiring planning and foresight in order to prevent the lemmings from walking off the map or into dangerous traps such as lava pools, high cliffs, fire or other life threatening situations. The player has eight skills to assign to certain lemmings that allow them to alter the landscape, influence the behavior of fellow lemmings or clear obstructions so that the herd can get through safely.
There are four levels of difficulty in the game; Fun, Tricky, Taxing and Mayhem. The player has many challenges such as indestructible steel plates or destructible obstacles like rocks and hills. The lemmings must cross deep chasms, bodies of water, climb high walls and navigate around or over pools of lava and other dangers. The game can be difficult due to the fact that lemmings go in one direction and ignore their fellows unless deterred by a "blocker". They will walk off a cliff or otherwise mindlessly go to their death unless the player finds a way to prevent it.
Lemmings is a fun game that adults enjoy and that develops critical thinking and strategy skills in younger players.
