Liferay Portal is enterprise quality portal software. A major focus is usability - allowing users to get started right away without spending too much time buried in thick manuals. However, being an enterprise class product installation and setup require some knowledge of application servers and databases.
As soon as Liferay is running it is ready for use. And with the included portlets (JSR 168) integration with other sub-systems can quickly be achieved. Liferay also includes it's own CMS (content management system) called Journal. Journal provides excellent separation of content and layout - making it simple to have anyone write and contribute new content.
On top of all this Liferay's features include support for LDAP (Active Directory) user management, workflow, single-sign on and finally a little AJAX.
