WinZip is what most computer users think of when they want to compress files to send or to save on their own computers. As well as saving space, WinZip is easy to use and is so common that nearly every serious computer user has used it at some time. Not only does it hasten a file's travel through cyberspace but files that have been Zipped use up much less disk space than uncompressed files.
WinZip's name recognition is nearly universal, having been around since the last decade of the twentieth century. Indeed, it is known as the "King of compression"! Along with its fame, you get a very user-friendly interface with wizards you can choose to use or not. WinZip also encrypts your sensitive documents using AES encryption, which is a must nowadays.
WinZip has such a stellar reputation that it is now bundled into the Google Toolbar as well as the Google Desktop Search. Whether you install WinZip is, of course, optional but there are very few programs that offer as many practical options and ease of use as WinZip.
The latest version of WinZip even compresses your JPEG images and includes bzip2 and PPMd, two additional compression technologies. You must specifically choose them when creating a Zip file, though, which means you get options. Most compression software gives you no choices.
